Carrier oils are the foundation of safe aromatherapy. Also known as base oils, they dilute essential oils before application to the skin, lowering the risk of irritation and helping the aroma spread gently.

Why dilute essential oils in a carrier oil

Essential oils are highly concentrated substances. Applied undiluted, they can cause irritation, sensitization and allergic reactions, even on healthy skin. A carrier oil works as a vehicle: it lowers the concentration per area of skin, slows the evaporation of the aromatic molecules and extends the contact time, which makes the application both safer and more efficient.

The ratios below are general aromatherapy references for topical use on healthy adults. In case of pregnancy, breastfeeding, use of medication, skin conditions or application on children, consult a qualified professional before use.

  • 0.5% to 1% (1 to 2 drops in 10 ml), face, sensitive skin, older adults and children over 6 years old.
  • 2% (4 drops in 10 ml), daily body use, pocket roll-ons, cosmetic care.
  • 3% to 5% (6 to 10 drops in 10 ml), targeted massage and occasional use for short periods.

How to choose your carrier oil

Dry, light oils such as jojoba and grapeseed absorb quickly and suit the face, the scalp and everyday use. Denser oils such as sweet almond and fractionated coconut glide better and work well for long massages. Always store them in an amber bottle, away from light and heat, and check the expiration date: unlike essential oils, carrier oils can go rancid.

One technical detail worth knowing: jojoba, despite being popularly called an oil, is actually a liquid wax. That structure is exactly what makes it very stable against oxidation and so similar to the skin's natural sebum, which is why it is one of the favorite carriers in aromatherapy.
